Solskogen 2020 Logo Competition

Against my better judgement, FuZion! and myself entered the Logos competition at the Solskogen Party 2020.

I’m not great at this shit, but I was playing around trying to render a logo for four hours over a few days, waiting for inspiration to strike, but it was more of a ‘oh fuck the deadline is in an hour… fuck it that will do’ moment.

My aim was not to become last.

The entries flashed up on the livestream and then mine appeared, it got good comments until someone said something along the lines of ‘we do animation now?’ It was probably at that moment I knew it wasn’t going to go well, and the benefit of hindsight, I think I entered the wrong competition, should have been the wildcard one which I think would have been more appropriate, so it wasn’t a static image.

Seeing is Believing font rebuild

It’s been a long time since I quit the Amiga, way back in the mid 1990’s, but unlike the rest of my memory, I can remember a hell of a lot of Amiga shit, sadly not 680×0 coding but something is better than nothing.

But this font from Anarchy’s Seeing is Believing demo has always stuck in my mind. I’ve used it on a lot of web sites, and wrote a JS script to replace any H2 tag with png images of each letter. Completely useless.

But I’ve always wanted to use the font somewhere properly, but this is were again size matters.

This font is so smalled on 720/1080 resolution that it’s not really viable unless you make it bigger, and well what idiot would spend hours doing that huh.

Er, well I would. Well there was fuck all else to do in early 2020 with the lockdown, so fuck it.

I doubled the size and created the outlines of the fonts, and updated the shades of RGB to something better. And that’s pretty much where I left it, I probably wouldn’t use all three but find some other texture to do instead, but here it is anyway.

Phenomena Enigma font

A little bored today, so decided to do something I’ve been meaning to do since 1991.

I love Phenomena’s Enigma demo, especially the music which I have five different remixes of and it’s not unheard of to listen to it all day while working from home.

There are some superb graphics as well by Uno of Scoopex, many of which I’ve tried to replicate in the past in Adobe Photoshop. But it was always the end screen font by Terminator of Phenomena that bugged me. Because it’s in medium resolution, the pixels are twice as high as they are wide, so when you rip it and try and use it, it looks like this:

Well that’s shit isn’t it.

So with too much time on my hands, I took that image and started to rebuild it for my uses.

Just stretching the image just makes it look incredibly blocky, so it was a manual process of redrawing a few characters and copy and pasting them onto the others, until I was moderately happy.

I’ve rearranged the characters to be in ASCII order, but moderately happy with it.

Not sure it was worth the 29 year wait and hour or so of work it took, but sure I can use it somewhere.

Reward of Scoopex R.I.P

Read this on a Facebook group and couldn’t believe it, hit me quite hard even though I never had any communication of any kind at all with the man.

Hard to put in context the impression he made on me, but suffice to say that Mental Hangover was draw dropping on first view. Not just because of the tracked loading changed the way demos were written, but the visuals were stunning, and Sami Vanhatalo (a.k.a Reward) was responsible for them.

From the golden eagle loading screen, to the blue chromish font to the stunning Mental Hangover logo.

By absolute coincidence, I was working on an updated version of that font for a production I was working on, but lost the will to carry on with it after reading the news of his passing.

Absolutely tragic, and a sad loss.

I got an Amiga 1200. Again.

This is my third or fourth Amiga 1200 that I’ve bought, but working from home is so fucking boring, I thought I’d splash out on something for myself. The fact the wife is 200 miles away and can’t see or stop it is a bonus.

Rough and ready setup

So I’ve got an Amiga 1200, 8mb memory expansion, 68882 FPU and a nice flash card at the back instead of an IDE hard disk, GoTek drive and Kickstart 3.1.4.

16gb partition? Thank you.

At least now I can play my Amiga music properly, unlike VLC or XMPlayer bollocks.

Working from home

Day one of working from home.

Couple hours in and already clock watching, never thought I’d say it but I’m missing my colleagues.

Thankfully I have Amiga demos running on my Mac to keep ears occupied at least.
